Una tarde,
María, mi hija mayor, me pidió que le enseñara a escribir su nombre. Tenía dos
años de edad. Era capaz de reconocerlo si lo veía escrito, incluso sabía
deletrearlo, pero no podía trazar sus letras y la vi muy frustrada y enfadada.
Cogí un
lápiz y un papel y comencé a dibujar. Sin pensarlo demasiado, empecé a
enseñarle el abecedario a partir de las formas geométricas que se escondían en
cada letra. Aquella manera de aprender le encantó y, como la vi tan
entusiasmada con esta actividad, por las
mañanas, mientras trabajaba en casa, buscaba un huequito para hacerle una
lámina basada en nuestros dibujos que pudiese colgar en su dormitorio. Así
surgió el puzzle set Geometric ABC and Numbers.
One
day, my daughter María asked me for teaching her to write his name, when she was two years old. She could to recognize and spell it, but she could´t draw his letters and she was very frustrated and angry.
I took a pen and a paper and I started drawing. Without thinking too much, I began to
teach the alphabet from geometric shapes hiding in each letter. She loved that way to
learn it and, as I saw her so excited about this activity, I made an alphabet print based on our drawings
for her bedroom. So the puzzle set Geometric ABC and Numbers emerged.
La idea de
comercializar mis diseños empezaba a crecer en mi cabeza, y muchos fueron los
bocetos que realicé con esa intención, pero jamás llegó a tomar forma hasta
un par de años después, cuando mi hijo pequeño, Carmelo, nos descubrió su
secreto.
The idea
of sending my designs began to grow in my head, and many were the sketches
that I made with that intention, but it never got to take shape until a couple of
years later, when my little son, Carmelo, discovered us his secret.
Carmelo. Cuesta un
poco echar la vista atrás cuando las cosas no son fáciles y cuando nada es como
esperabas. Mi pequeño, mi miniyo, es sordo y llegar hasta el punto en el que
hoy nos encontramos, pues él escucha bastante bien gracias a sus implantes cocleares,
no puedo decir que haya sido fácil, ni que tampoco lo sea ahora, cuando lo más
complicado (visitas a los especialistas en busca de un diagnóstico, dos
operaciones para colocarle sus ICs, apoyo logopédico intensivo para ayudarle a
discriminar los sonidos, a comprender el lenguaje y a hablar) parece superado.
El día a
día, no era sencillo. Para hacerlo algo más fácil, aparqué mi trabajo como
infografista en un periódico de mi ciudad y, para mantener mi mente viva y
activa, porque vocación de ama de casa no tengo, volví a coger papel y lápiz y me puse a dibujar; y esa idea de comercializar mis ilustraciones, regresó a
mi cabeza con más fuerza.
It´s hard to look back when things are not easy and when nothing is as you expected. My
boy, my little son, is deaf and to get to the point where we are today, because he
listens very well thanks to his cochlear implants, it has not been easy,
nor that neither is now, when the most complicated (lots of visits to specialists, two operations to place their CIs, intensive speech
therapy support to help him listen and talk)
seems overcome.
To make it easier, I left my job as infographist in a
newspaper and to keep alive and active my mind, because vocation
housewife I do not have, I took a pencil and a paper and started drawing; and that
idea to send my illustrations, returned to my head harder.
Dibujé,
dibujé y dibujé. Definí mi imagen y establecí mi nombre, Rachel´s Puzzle Things.
¿Porqué Rachel´s Puzzle Things?.
Me gusta
mezclar y combinar y me gusta contar historias. Me encantan las composiciones, los
puzles y los museos y sus paredes repletas de cuadros desiguales. Y estaba dándole
vueltas a esta idea cuando me di cuenta de que mis diseños, sin ser
planteados así desde un primer momento, acababan siendo ilustraciones puzle.
I drew,
drew and drew. I designed my identity and chose my name, Rachel's Puzzle Things. Why Rachel´s Puzzle Things?.
I like to
mix and match and I like telling stories. I love the compositions, puzzles and
museums and its walls filled with pictures. And I was thinking over this idea when I realized that almost all my designs, without being so raised from the start, ended
up being puzzle illustrations.
Con el
paso de los días, fui definiendo mis modelos y hoy, he conseguido al fin abrir
mi tienda, donde puedes encontrar mis diseños, dibujos e ilustraciones
que, como piezas de un puzle, se hablan y completan. Así me expreso, narro y cuento.

el final de este cuento, sea un final feliz!
With the time, I was defining my puzzle sets and today, I finally open
my shop where you can find my designs and drawings, illustrations that, like pieces
of a puzzle, spoken and complete themselves. So I express, narrate and story.
